Learning Basketball

Activity Started – 3 August 2014

Activity End – 31 August 2014

Approximate Time - 8 hour

Criteria of CAS – Action

Basketball is one of the world’s most popular sports. There are many fans of basketball all over the world.  So when my friend Kaustubh Murmare asked me whether I want to learn basketball? My answer was obviously yes. Who doesn't want to be a basketball player? This was a new challenge i undertook.

On the first day (3rd August) we planned the activities we will do in all of these days. Today he taught me rules & regulations, and how to play. The game is played in quarters of 12 minutes. There are five players in both the teams and the aim is to shoot the ball through a hoop. Players get 3 points if they shoot behind the 3 pointer line and 2 points if they shoot in the 3 pointer line area. The ball is advanced on the court by bouncing it while walking, running and passing it a team mate. It is a foul to run or walk without dribbling the ball or to hold the ball with both hands then resume dribbling. Today I gave 2 hours for this activity.

On second day (10th August) we started with a run then stretching. Shooting is very important in basketball, so first thing we did was shooting practice. He told me to target the rectangular box on the backboard, and it really works if you hit the box the ball really goes into the hoop. Today we did also did practice of passing, dribbling and rebounding. We also played a match with a local team and we won. It feels great when you do hardwork and win. Today I gave 2 hours for this activity. I am developing new skills by this activity.

On the third day (17th August) we did stretching then we did dribbling practice. Kaustubh taught us running dribble and cross dribble. While dribbling the ball should below waist line. After that he taught us running shoot, In that you have to aim and shoot the basket while running. Then we did catching and shooting, Kaustubh threw the ball in the air we caught the ball and then did running shoot. Today I gave 2 hours for this activity.

On the fourth Day (31st August) Today we did warm-up, running and other exercises and then played a practice match with Kaustubh’s club members. Strategy is very important part in a game, so we discussed the strategy. We decide that in first quarter we will defensive then in second we will be offensive and third again defensive then again offensive in fourth quarter. I was given the position on 45 degree. I had to be offensive and defensive both. We took rest and then wished eachother luck for the match and thanked our couch.

By this activity I understood I have to work collaboratively with my teammates, and to make ethical decisions.

Hosting Independence Day event

Date: 15 August 2014
Criteria of CAS – Creativity
Approximate time - 6 hours
Venue – D Y Patil International School, Nagpur

“India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grandmother of tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only.” - Mark Twain

Independence Day was coming and like every year our school organize a big function. This day represent the sacrifices and movement India did to get independence from British. I gave my name for hosting the show, our CAS coordinator selected me and Urja Themaskar. This activity was a new challenge for me. Patriotism was in the air, everyone was working for the occasion. I and Urja planned the whole event, we made a list of events. Then we wrote the hosting material. I started memorizing everything because we had a practice the day after.
Independence Day: We started the event council members’ felicitation ceremony. I was made the head boy of our school. I lead the march-pass and then we took oath to follow the responsibility given to us.

I was very excited because hosting such big event is a huge responsibility. This was an opportunity for me to show my patriotism. I and Urja were very serious about this responsibility. I started by giving some information about the Day.
Independence Day, observed annually on 15, August, is a National Holiday in India commemorating the nation's independence from the British Empire on 15 August 1947. India attained independence following an Independence Movement noted for largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress (INC). Independence coincided with the partition of India, in which the British Indian Empire was divided along religious lines into the Dominions of India and Pakistan; the partition was accompanied by violent riots and mass casualties, and the displacement of nearly 15 million people due to sectarian violence.
On 15 August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, who had become the first Prime Minister of India that day, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahore Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. On each subsequent Independence Day, the Prime Minister has raised the flag and given a speech.

The first performance was by PYP children. It was amazing and had a very good message in it.

Then Swar Nakhate gave speech in Hindi. It was a spectacular experience watching such small kid present some great thoughts with amazing language.

The next performance was by our CBSE kids. They sung some wonder patriotic songs.

Then MS and DP girls gave a beautiful dance performance.

Then our PYP kids sung patriotic songs.

The last one was a speech by Sakshi.

This was an extraordinary experience. I and Urja worked collaboratively for this activity.

Hiroshima day Assembly

Date: 8 August 2014
Criteria of CAS: Service
Approximate time: 2 hours
Venue: D Y Patil International School, Nagpur

We are still living in the aftershock of Hiroshima, people are still the scars of history.” - Edward Bond

In August 1945, during the final stage of the Second World War, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two bombings, which killed at least 129,000 people, remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in history.

Our CAS coordinator gave us responsibility to present this to our school. We planned the whole event. I was given responsibility to explain how this occurred and how they did the bombing. Hiroshima was the primary target of the first nuclear bombing mission on August 6, with Kokura and Nagasaki as alternative targets. The 393d Bombardment Squadron B-29 Enola Gay, piloted by Tibbets, took off from North Field, Tinian, about six hours' flight time from Japan. The Enola Gay (named after Tibbets' mother) was accompanied by two other B-29s. The Great Artiste, commanded by Major Charles Sweeney, carried instrumentation, and a then-nameless aircraft later called Necessary Evil, commanded by Captain George Marquardt, served as the photography aircraft.

70,000–80,000 people, of whom 20,000 were soldiers, or around 30% of the population of Hiroshima, were killed by the blast and resultant firestorm,[133][134] and another 70,000 injured.

Over 90% of the doctors and 93% of the nurses in Hiroshima were killed or injured—most had been in the downtown area which received the greatest damage. The hospitals were destroyed or heavily damaged. Only one doctor, Terufumi Sasaki, remained on duty at the Red Cross Hospital. Nonetheless, by early afternoon, the police and volunteers had established evacuation centres at hospitals, schools and tram stations, and a morgue was established in the Asano library.

With all heart I tried to present it to the audience. I wanted them to feel and understand what the people of Hiroshima went through. We worked collaboratively to convey this message.

Donation to Swami Vivekanad medical mission hospital

Date: 28 July 2014
Criteria of CAS – Service
Approximate time - 3 hours
Venue – Swami Vivekanad medical mission hospital

"The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient while nature cures the disease." - Voltaire

We planned to donate the money we have gathered by doing CAS activities till now. So there were many options to this prosperous task. Health of citizens in our country is very crucial. A huge segment of our population die due to malnutrition and other disease, because they don’t have enough money to pay for their treatment. So we decided to give this an organization which helps poor people and work for this purpose with passion.

Our CAS coordinator suggested many organizations, we selected Swami Vivekanad medical mission hospital. As they are working for this purpose from many years. Plus they operate in the poorest and far place in the district, where there is no chance of finding any medical help. We met their representative and we got to know that they share the same passion. We decided to help those donating tablets, medical equipment and other medicines which they can use for this excellent purpose, “curing”. Through this activity we engaged with issues of global importance.

Environmental Week

Activity Started – 7 July 2014

Activity End - 11 July 2014

Approximate Time - 8 hour

Criteria of CAS – Services

First we planned the activity and gave responsibilities to everyone. This activity was an issue of global importance, as it was about environment concerns.

Day 1: Topic was Environment and pollution. Responsibility of managing the assembly was given to my classmate Shradha Wakode. She asked me say the prayer. I was happy with the sweat little responsibility I was given. Praying is good thing which helps you to maintain your calm just like meditating. Plus it enhance your mind power and gives you strength because you know someone is always present to take care of you.

Day 2: Topic was Climate change and Natural disaster effecting our environment. Responsibility of managing the assembly was given to me and my friend Jaidev Pahade. I was very excited about this assembly as I had the opportunity to show my mic skills. Plus I got the opportunity to explain my schoolmates about climate change, a very interesting topic. Just like every assembly we had prayer. Then my friend Kaustubh Murmare presented a thought by Mahatma Gandhi. My classmate Himanshu acquainted us about the current affairs. Then I and Jaidev started our showstopper our presentation my topic was Climate change. I am well acquainted with the topic but I found out that many of the students were not. There are two types in giving presentation first one is explaining everything keeping  it boring, the other one is which I choose interacting with the audience, asking them questions, using sense of humor. I asked them questions about specific topics e.g. what is Climate Change? What is the cause of Climate change? What is Global Warming? What are the causes of Global warming? I showed perseverance and commitment as I was responsible for the day.

Day 3: Topic was How to control and minimize global warming and other harmful factors. Responsibility of managing the assembly was given to Himanshu Halve and Rucha Verma. My friend Himanshu asked me to present the news. As IB students I think we should be aware of current affairs. I felt like a news reporter and I present myself as a news reporter too. It was a fun experience telling the headlines. I myself love watching news, how they present it in their studio and sometimes they chance to go to different places and cover the event (it may be a natural disaster, election, social event and even a music concert). This activity increased my awareness of the world I live in and I also founded an area for growth.

Day 4: The event was Tree plantation and we called it Green Day. Our CAS coordinator give all of us different responsibilities. I was given the responsibility of plantation done by grade 1 and 2 and our director G. C. Rao sir and DP coordinator Gopalraj sir and to say a thought. Everybody gathered at the amphitheater with their saplings, ready to help to the environment. As the starting part of the assembly I said the thought to make everybody's day a good one. I was very happy that I was able to help the environment on my side, as CAS say think globally act locally. I also planted a lilium, there was no limit to my happiness. I never thought I will get so much joy planting a sapling.

We all worked collaboratively to make this activity a success.

On 1 July 2014 I got to know that my class will be organizing US Independence Day celebration and I would be the in charge. I was very excited as I haven’t managed any assembly since the Hindi Divas last year. This was a very different deal from Hindi Divas it was more about Country’s prestige and pride. America has awesome and extraordinary history. First thing we did was planned and initiated activities. I gave responsibilities to my fellow classmates.

US Independence Day also commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States of America commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. We celebrated this day because our school is a world community, we respect and love every country. So this was very good chance to show our fondness to United States.

The program started with prayer, to the lord for everything he has given to us. Then I started with introducing audience with the topic. Then there a thought of George Washington (First president of USA) presented by Jaidev Pahade. After that I called Kaustubh Murmare to give us information about current affairs.
Then there Himanshu Halve and Shradha Wakode to give a beautiful presentation on history of USA and celebration of 4th July.
We celebrated birthday of a teacher then we called Director Sir to address the assembly.

After we ended the assembly we were praised from other students and teachers. I gave credit to our whole team, I worked collaboratively with others for this event. Everybody  praised and said that I m a very good host. So this activity also Increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth.

(I apologize for the bad quality of  photos.)
